A new day dawned on Clarion, and Lead Tetrarch Julius Thrall exited his mansion by the sea for his usual morning jog.

He was followed by three guard bots, although no one else stood within kilometers of his home or the path he took down the beach.

When he came back later in the morning he headed straight for the shower to freshen up, then to the kitchen table for breakfast prepared by yet another bot.

Then and only then did his mistress, Raquel Kirkland, even think about getting out of bed.

She came downstairs yawning, wearing a thin satin robe and little else.

She considered, briefly, digitizing and traveling downstairs through the house’s wiring. But she was too tired for that, having stayed up late watching holos.

Raquel was an Intangible, one of a handful of survivors from wartime experiments designed to develop humans capable of personal teleportation.

In Raquel’s case, she received the ability to digitize her body and move through electrical circuits. She was one of the few successes involving these experiments, and had been picked up by Thrall and the head of SSI-Epsilon years ago.

She went on to become one of the most successful assassins during the war.

Also one of the more unstable ones.

She flipped sides at least twice, and nobody was ever quite sure where her loyalties lay.

Then she rescued Thrall, assisting in his daring escape from Epsilon after the Republicans took over, thus solidifying her fidelity in his mind.

They had been on again, off again lovers during the war. Since then, in the months that followed, they were on again. They had been together the longest contiguous time ever since escaping Epsilon.

And it showed. Raquel looked bored. She scratched an itch under her indent’s collar, the permanently attached modified implement which allowed her to digitize herself.

She plopped down at the table and a serving bot scurried over with a fork and plate.

“What are we having?”

As if in reply, the bot ladled sausage patties on the plate made from a local bird that somewhat resembled wild turkeys. Then it poured her a glass of orange juice, imported from Thalia.

“Would you like toast?” it asked.

“No. Go away.”

The bot tramped off to the kitchen and Raquel cut into the sausage with her fork with a rather sullen expression on her face.

“You seem distracted,” Thrall observed from the other side of the table.

In truth, Thrall made for an awful mate. Emotionally distant, reserved and reticent, he had little to offer in a relationship. If it were not for the fact he was handsome, supremely confident and the most powerful man in the galaxy, Raquel would probably not be attracted to him.

Other men had been able to hold onto her for a while simply by showering her with love and attention.

Yet despite his foibles, Thrall held a special place in her heart. After all, he rescued her from Raton Five back in the day. Right after she made the experimentation station self-destruct . . .

“I’m just thrilled,” she said, her mouth full of sausage. “But seriously .
