Those Left Behind

I

The Unity Club members who went to Noboricho Junior High School heard about the death of Sadako Sasaki around lunch time. Fumiko Yamamoto later wrote this account of what happened:

I was playing after lunch when Haraguchi-san, who had been in sixth grade with us, came up and said, "Yamamoto-san, I heard Sasaki-san died this morning."

"She really died?" I hoped it was a lie.

"She really died."

After school that day, everyone in the club got together and hurried to Sasaki-san's home. There we were told that Sasaki-san's remains were at a temple so we headed over there.
