âI wanted to thank you for allowing me to come in. Itâs really exciting.â
Scott had been walking around the office lighting scented candles when Rocâs guest had come in. While the man was still in his twenties, he looked too old to be an intern.
âYes. Itâs a good job for you,â said Roc. âYouâre going to be in on the ground floor here. Weâre building something really special.â Roc had picked up most of his laundry and dirty dishes, but they were piled in the bathroom sink. The man was a menace.
Scott strode over and said, âIâm Scott Kinder. You realize thereâs no salary, right? Itâs more of a chance to learn.â
âGreat to meet you, sir. Iâm Mike Johnson.â The recruitâs handshake was firm, confident. âMr. Pederson and I were going over the terms now.â
âI told you. Call me Roc. Itâs going to be commission-based, just like we talked about.â
âIf youâd like, sir.â
Roc looked to Scott. âOur friend Mike, here, is going to work with me tracking and capturing another couple of those monsters. Ten grand each.â
âPlus, an additional five thousand if I make the killing stroke,â Mike finished.
âYes, yes, of course.â
âSo, youâre all in on this?â said Scott. âYou donât think weâre hacks?â
âOh no, sir. These missing menâitâs a sign from God. We need to send these things back to hell.â
âRight . . . â said Scott. âWell, welcome aboard.â
âWe actually just got a tip before you came in,â said Roc to their new contract employee. âLooks like itâs going to be a trial by fire.â
âBut I donât even know how to use the equipment yet,â said Mike. It was the first time his confidence looked to have wavered.
âYouâll be fine. Mr. Kinder here will show you what you need to know. We recently retrofitted some new toys.â
âDo I really need to go through the basics with him of shooting a woman with a water gun?â said Scott, turning to the new intern. âYou know how to do that, donât you?â Scott had meant it as a joke, but he saw that he had made the young man uncomfortable.
âThatâs not all this is, right?â
âThatâs really been more of a fun perk,â said Roc. âBut no.â He tossed Scott a yellow notepad. âI spoke to a woman who said sheâs seen a variety of attractive women walk alone behind her house for the last three months at approximately the same time of day. Said she never thought anything of it, but when she saw us on the news it got her thinking. She said the women were dressed nice, and they all have big boobs, apparently. I took some notes.â
âDid you write this with your fucking feet?â said Scott, looking at the legal pad.
âGive it to Mike,â said Roc and Scott handed the notes over. âHow does it look to you?â
Mike nodded thoughtfully. âWriting is a little unconventional, but I think I can read it. Whatâs this word?â He leaned closer to show Roc.
âThatâs a kangaroo. I doodle when Iâm on the phone.
