CHAPTER 20
Returning to work after a week of mourning, Beth, for the most part, seemed to be healing. Entering the police station, colleagues expressed their sincere condolences brought a few tears. She appreciated the expressions of sympathy. It was something she would have to get used to for some time. Not working at the police department that long, seeing the caring attitude was refreshing and lifted her spirits. If that was the typical behavior in the law enforcement brotherhood, she was fortunate and thrilled to be part of it.
Approaching her desk, she noticed that it was just as she left it, clean and orderly. However, she was only off for a week, even though it felt much longer. Being a psychologist, she knew to lose a loved one; time didnât fly quickly for anyone, especially not her. Carlaâs laptop was open, her nose to the grind. Hearing familiar footsteps on the tile floor, in her peripheral vision, Beth was back. A smile came across her face as she reached her desk and placed a large file on it, then sat down. While staring at Carla, a quizzical expression covered Carlaâs face. âBeth, please donât tell me you took Pennyâs file back with you. I know everyone has to have a relief mechanism when dealing with the loss of a loved one, but work-related, especially, in this case, I donât get it.â
âInterrogation room, now.â Bethâs abruptness crushed Carlaâs welcoming smile.
Once inside the room, taking a seat across from each other, she handed Carla her momâs confession. Glancing briefly at the handwritten letter, she said, âThis is not from Pennyâs file, so, what is it?â
âJust read it, my mom wrote this knowing someday I would find it; unfortunately, she didnât know it would be this soon.â
Carla, seeing tears changing a face of happiness into one of sorrow, replied, âIâm so sorry for what youâve been through.â
Tears wiped away; a quirky smile crossed her lips. A quick sigh of composure, Beth responded, âThanks for being there for me, I owe you.â
Carla acknowledged her and read Bethâs motherâs final message to her daughter. While reading, Carlaâs expression on her face was, well, expressionless, except for an occasional raising of her brow or a slight quiver of her lower lip. Carla had lost her mother long ago and knew the pain Beth was experiencing. Finished with the letter, she slid it across the table. Emotions raging in her soul from such a personal confession hit home. Reverent serenity bloomed in the room as they stared at each other in silence. Reaching for Bethâs hand, Carla said, âWhat are you going to do?â
Trying to lighten it up a little, she replied, âWell, you know, how did I answer this situation the other day?â
âYou know, youâre getting just like me, uh, answering a question with a question. You said you try to find your biological mother, are you?â
âThatâs what I said. I have a twin sister out there, and a biological mother, so yeah. Today, I begin my search for the secrets of my past.
