CHAPTER 41

‘BLOODY HELL, NATE. Are you sure you’ve got enough wood?’ Jessie said as she inspected the back of his truck.

‘You may jest, but wait until I tell you what I have in mind.’ He turned her to face the cottage. ‘Picture this…’

Jessie snorted as Nate spread his legs and framed the cottage with his hands. She bit down on her lip as he looked at her.

‘Are you taking this seriously, Ms Ellis?’

‘Sorry. Do continue, Mr Parker.’

Nate nodded and started again. ‘Picture this.’ He paused, but Jessie resisted the urge to make fun, instead stepping forward and focusing on the cottage, her mind constructing images as Nate spoke.

‘I think we put a row of posts along the length of the cottage. We’ll fix them into the overhang of your bedroom, where I’m pretty sure I’ll find where a similar structure used to be. Then what I propose is laying reclaimed oak boards to create the wooden porch look you’ve mentioned. Last but not least, I suggest fitting retractable screens which wouldn’t block your view, and would create the illusion of being outside in the elements, whilst actually being shielded from them. All I need to know from you is where you want the swing? What do you think?’ He turned to look at her, his face questioning.

Jessie didn’t acknowledge him; instead she walked from one end of the cottage to the other, looking at it from multiple angles. Finally, she put him out of his misery and grinned. ‘I love it!’

‘Thank God!’ Nate exhaled in relief, and Jessie burst out laughing.

‘I’m surprised you had your doubts, given what I said when you first mentioned it.’

‘Well, being a woman, I wasn’t sure if you’d exert your right to change your mind.’

‘Ouch!’ Jessie said, feigning a blow to the stomach.

‘We’re even now.’ Nate winked before handing her a spade and a tape measure. ‘Right, we best get started then, as I want to get the posts cemented into the ground today before I have to disappear, and we’ve got a good few holes to dig before we can do that.’

Jessie took the spade and measure and followed him. ‘Where’re you disappearing to?’

‘Oh, you know how I said I’d taken your advice vis-à-vis working with Mac and Johnny?’

Jessie nodded.

‘Well, they called the other night. Our first commission starts tomorrow, down south somewhere, Cambridge, I think.’

Jessie squealed, and, abandoning her tools, she threw her arms around his neck. ‘Nate, that’s fantastic! I’m so pleased for you. How long will you be away?’

‘A week to start with. I’m doing the design, so I need to get a feel for the place and then do as much as I can while I’m there. If I need to, I’ll finish it when I get back. I can’t be away too long; Em would do her nut.’

He picked up Jessie’s tools and handed them back to her.

‘Oh, I almost forgot, I got something for you.’ He ran to his truck, grabbing something off the front seat.

A present, already?

Excitement bubbled up inside until he showed it to her.
