Another dinner with T’kwenn’s family was concluding. My stomach was so full it looked like I’d been inflated. When I left the table and moved to the living area’s couch, Joola and her siblings giggled, pointing at my rounded belly.

“Rascals,” I chided. “I’m only getting fatter because your mother is so generous to me.”

“I’m not the only one who’s generous, apparently,” she called from the kitchen. When I looked at her, she brandished the stack of credits I’d left them last time I’d been here.

I blushed and I was about to respond when a sound came from outside the building that made us all gasp and look toward the windows. Automatic weapons.

Someone was shooting out there.
