The battalion went into the line at the Belgian village of Ploegsteert. Another officer, Lieutenant Hakewell-Smith, described Churchill’s excursions into no man’s land: ‘It was a nerve-racking experience to go with him. He never fell when a shell went off; he never ducked when a bullet went past with its loud crack. He used to say, after watching me duck, “It’s no damn use ducking: the bullet has gone a long way past you now.”’ His headquarters was at a place called Laurence Farm, in the courtyard of which he set up his easel, having, in the months since losing office, begun to paint as an antidote to frustration. Shells exploded round about, but he carried on. Hakewell-Smith recalled that as a particular painting neared completion Churchill became angry and difficult to talk to, then his mood changed abruptly for the better. Hakewell-Smith enquired what had happened, to which Churchill replied, ‘I couldn’t get the shell hole right in the painting. However I did it, it looked like a mountain, but yesterday I discovered that if I put a bit of white in it, it looked like a hole after all.’
