Amanda dropped the curtain when Mark’s car disappeared around the corner. She wished he’d come back for dessert—the fattening kind, anyway.

Most guys would have come upstairs hoping she’d meant something else. Everything about Mark was different, except perhaps that fear of commitment he wore like body armor. Sure, a thousand Taliban warriors bent on destroying him, no problem. One vertically-challenged blonde, and he runs away in terror.

She sighed. He wasn’t coming back. Reluctantly, she headed for the bedroom, where she plugged her phone into the charger on her nightstand. She was halfway through brushing her teeth when her phone rang.

She smiled into the mirror. It was him. It had to be.

She quickly finished and started for the bedroom. It stopped ringing, but she’d call him right back. She was in the hallway when she heard a knock at the door.

She smiled so wide, her cheeks hurt. He’d come back after all.

She ran to the door and flung it open.

A man stood there, his black hoodie covering shocking white-blond hair, his left eye blackened and swollen. Amanda tried to slam the door, but he stepped in and blocked it. He grabbed the back of her head with his left hand, covered her mouth with his right, and pushed her inside. Then with his leg, he swept her feet from beneath her and released her head. Her upper back slammed against the hardwood floor. Her breath whooshed out.

She struggled to pull in air. Wanted to stand. Couldn’t. Ignoring the stabbing pain in her back, she crawled toward the kitchen. Scream! Only the tiniest, raspy noise came out.

She looked over her shoulder and watched as the man calmly closed and locked the door. He crouched beside her and pushed her onto her side. She pulled her knees up, still trying to pull breath into her lungs.

“It was only a matter of time before he left you alone,” he said. “Fortunately, I’m a very patient man.”
