Half an hour later, they’d filled three backpacks and were heading back to the warehouse. Amira walked ahead, thoughts swirling through her mind. This was the perfect moment to leave. Virginia wouldn’t stop her. No explanations. No goodbyes. She could simply leave.

But what about Chloe?

The sound of rapid steps approaching from behind pulled her from her thoughts.

Amira spun around.

Three women, skinny, pale with matted hair surrounded them. “Give us your backpacks and your guns,” one of them instructed. Her eyes had sunken into her skull, her brow jutting out. Red spots covered her skin, her cheeks glistening with sweat. She raised a gun.

Amira raised her arms above her head. “Let’s not be rash,” she said as slowly as possible to buy herself some time. Her mind raced, her eyes finding Virginia’s. Amira gave her a faint nod.

“She’s going to—” Chloe didn’t finish her sentence, instead jumped, shielding Amira with her body. Spotty’s eyes flickered as the gun went off with a deafening pang.

Later, Amira struggled to reconstruct the events. Pain exploded in her forehead—gone an instant later. The shot echoed in her ears, her entire body vibrating. Chloe smashed into her, thrown back by the impact. They both stumbled, Chloe’s hands clutching at her stomach.

Amira inhaled sharply as all air was knocked from her lungs. “Are you hurt?” She looked to Virginia, horror turning her face into a grim mask.

No blood, not even a scratch. Her clothes were unharmed, no bullet holes adorned their jackets.

Chloe wheezed. Coughs shook her as she searched herself for injuries.

Virginia lifted her good arm, waved her hand, and the three women flew, hitting the concrete wall behind them. They dropped to the ground like sacks of rice.

“You’ve been practicing,” Amira remarked.

“What’s just happened?” Chloe asked.

“I’m not sure,” Virginia said. “It looked like the bullet hit a wall instead of you. I felt the air vibrate, like it had turned solid. Like a shield.” She turned to Amira. “Was that you?”

Amira stared at her hands, confused. “But Chloe stood in front of me.”

“It wasn’t me,” Chloe said.

Rubbing her forehead, Amira blinked. “I felt pain, but just for a second. I don’t know what happened…” She wiped her nose. No blood.

“Neat,” Virginia said.

“Why did you jump in front of me?” Amira asked Chloe. She observed as the woman forced a smile, brushing blonde hair back from her face. Had Chloe tried to save her life? Why?

“They were about to shoot.”

Amira scowled. “We don’t even know each other.”

Virginia nudged her. “Just say thank you.”

“Thank you,” Amira mumbled obediently.

“Thank you for saving me,” Chloe replied.

They turned to the three women on the ground.

“What do we do with them?” Chloe asked.

Amira shrugged. “I’d say empty their pockets and kill them, but Gin won’t like that suggestion.” Anger laced her tone.

One of the women whimpered.

“I know, you said we need to strip ourselves of our humanity in order to survive, but it’s all we have left,” Virginia said softly.

Amira sighed. “You’re young, and that’s great, but nobody else thinks like that.”

“I do,” Chloe said.
