To clear my head, I decided to stay in London for a couple of nights. As much as I preferred my new place in Bridesmere—a one-bedroom apartment in a recently refurbished Victorian building—I needed some space. I also couldn’t bring myself to return Savanah’s many calls. Declan was the only person I’d contacted to ask for a couple of days off.

As I moved around the council flat I’d grown up in, there was no trace of Angus. No empty bottles. No empty pizza boxes or even rubbish lying around.

The jarring difference between my new and former home took some adjusting to and was like daylight when leaving a cinema. The council estate, with its dealers and lowlife, was a far cry from the friendly smiles that came with village life.

Although that flat reminded me of who I was before I fell into this rich and powerful world, spending time at Merivale had taught me that rich people’s problems were just like everyone else’s. Only they ate better. Drank quality alcohol. And didn’t need to steal to buy drugs.

Drinking a beer, I leaned back on my late mother’s worn recliner, a chair that had held her cancer-riddled body for that last year of her life. I could even still smell her favourite perfume she wore all my life. A lump formed in my throat. Funny how a scent will do that to you. Suddenly I could see her kind, suffering eyes. It was then that I decided God didn’t exist. How could he do that to such a woman who would have given her last penny to anyone in need?

I closed my eyes, inhaled and exhaled, and thought about my mother’s rosy cheeks, which would flush when she was happy. I imagined her pride and joy at knowing I was no longer stuck in poverty, and that I’d put down a deposit on a new apartment.

Clearing my head of sad thoughts, I turned on the television. Man U. was playing, and with a six-pack chilling in the fridge and a pizza smiling back at me, I felt quite at home and miles away from the shitstorm brewing in Savanah’s universe.

My phone sounded. Seeing it was Declan, I picked up. “Hey, what’s up?”

“Savanah’s been badly beaten.”

“You’re fucking kidding me.” My veins froze. “Fucking Bram, I bet.” Blood rushed through me, setting me into battle mode. I needed this bastard’s balls on a platter.

“She’s not saying who did it. She’s asking for you. That’s why I’m calling.”

I rubbed my head repeatedly. “Is she okay?”

“She’s in hospital. Her face is pretty messed up. She sustained a fair bit of bruising. He’s a fucking animal.”

My head swirled as though immersed in a cloud of thunder. I wanted to kill him.

“She keeps asking for you. I’m sorry. I know you asked for a few days off.”

“It’s fine. I’ll go now. Just send me the details.”

“She told me that someone had sent you the sex tape.”

“Yep.” I puffed. “I even spoke to Bram at his family home. He denied it.
