Chapter 4
"Shit! Those fuckers! You can't keep me out! I won't let you!" Esharveer pounded one fist on his knee. Romantek had locked him out of his secret pathway, and had sent some bloodhound to rescue Marie Carthage from his plan to put her through a drowning experience. As it was, he'd killed off her maid in front of her by programming the avatar to jump overboard, but that hadn't been enough. There were other ways. He still knew some secrets from his time working for them. Unfortunately, they were far more dangerous to him, personally.
The children upstairs had returned and his concentration was utterly shot, but after a few minutes of rest he'd be okay.
Rest was elusive, however. His mind kept going over and over the situation, planning, plotting, discarding ideas and focusing on those that seemed promising. Nothing new came to him. Was revenge worth the danger? His plan would certainly succeed. It was practically flawless, providing Romantek couldn't trace the signal back to him. Esharveer was ninety percent sure it wouldn't be possible to trace it, but there were tricks that none but the tech weenies at the top knew. He'd tried to get into those upper echelons when he was working there, but it took years and a lot more connections than he could make. They were prejudiced against East Indians; he was sure of it. Although many of their programmers came from there, only a few had made it into management. Other ethnicities got there first, it seemed to him. Other programmers were given opportunities he was not. It was unfair, and Romantek would get what it deserved when he fixed it so that they'd be locked up in court and unable to operate, even in international waters. Their stupid "dreaming ships" would become useless hulks, and their technology would stagnate and soon be obsolete.
Esharveer was determined. He was very confident and there was nothing to stop him. His new plan was foolproof.
As a dreamer, he could do anything. All he had to do was set up his character and situation. Those servers weren't so difficult to access. Getting into the dream as an avatar, that was the dangerous and tricky part. If he had the money, he'd make up a false identity and pay for a dream vacation, hijack it and do as he pleased, but he'd have to go about things the hard way. He'd have to use his chip and programming skills to get in as a dreamer, through all the levels of security.
The security was one matter, and he was sure he could outwit those imbeciles at Romantek Operations, but using his chip without being immersed in the nanite gel was extremely dangerous. The chip could easily overheat and fry his brain. It had never been more than theorized.
Esharveer touched the place on his scalp where he'd inserted the chip. It was warmer than the surrounding tissue, but not by much. Thus far, it had been no more dangerous than any
