Knowledge Concentrates at the Court

First and foremost, however, the court was the place where scholars gathered to exchange information, knowledge, and ideas and to pursue their scientific studies or creative writing. The court comprised a unique communication community of power and knowledge, which messengers and letters then expanded beyond its physical confines. Alcuin called Aix, which at that time had just been promoted to the king’s permanent residence, a new Athens in the land of the Franks (letter 170). The royal hall in Charlemagne’s palace rang with praise of the ruler, a eulogy written in dignified hexameters and possibly performed to the accompaniment of the lyre:

Illum aliquando tegunt nimboso nubila tractu,

Hunc ullae numquam possunt variare procellae;

Ille caret proprio bissenis lumine horis,

Iste suam aeterno conservat sidere lucem.

Pace nitet leata, pariter pietate redundans

Nescit habere pio lapsurum lumine casum.
