“AND?” MALLORY PROMPTED, when Max didn’t continue.

“And what? He was a dick,” Max said, looking into the empty mug of disgusting but effective hangover cure. “He ordered two drinks and then just strutted away. He always strutted, God.”

“What was he referring to?”

“I have no idea,” Max said. “He didn’t say what he had on me. Just said he knew, and winked.”

“You don’t know? You don’t have any secrets?” Mallory asked, frowning.

“We all have secrets, don’t we?” Max asked. “I didn’t know what in my past he had unearthed. I wasn’t going to ask—for all I know, he wanted me to lead him toward a secret, or confirm something he only suspected.”

“All right,” Mallory said. “What happened next?”

Max thought, trying to appear as if the memory wasn’t clear and painful. “I asked for another glass of wine. They said they were out. I went to find Reggie, and he was talking to Oscar. They looked angry. Oscar just smirked at me when he saw me coming, so I stopped to talk to Agent Draughn. Oscar was loud and belligerent, said something about sleeping with Amy that night. He’d given Reggie one of the mugs he had gotten, which made me mad. I’d asked Reggie that night if he knew that Oscar was gathering dirt on everyone, and he said I shouldn’t be surprised, and that it was my fault that we were involved with his dirty dealings. And”—the memory was painful, more painful than the burns on his arms—“when Oscar just laughed at Reggie, I lost my temper. All I remember is being so angry. So hurt. And then I woke up in my apartment like this.” He held out his hands again.

“So you don’t remember taking your anger out on Oscar? Or Reggie, for that matter? He seemed pretty mad.”

“I don’t remember,” Max said evenly.

She waited another beat and then sighed. “All right. Let’s get you to medbay, then I need to get back to my apartment for a bit.”
