12: Chaos Reigns
A sharp knock at his door jolted Twigs from his sleep. He had been dreaming that he was running. He pulled off the covers with a trembling hand. A thin sheen of sweat covered his skin. He had been running down a long dark corridor. At first, he had thought he was being chased because he was so scared. Then he realised he could see a shadowy figure ahead of him, he was the one chasing it. The more he ran, the further away it got. All he knew was that he couldn’t lose sight of it. If he couldn’t see it, he was going to die.
It was at that moment of realisation that Twigs was dragged from his sleep.
The knock was repeated. He wiped the sweat from his brow and stood up. He pulled on his dressing gown and went to the door. Shiv was waiting outside for him. She pushed past him impatiently without so much as a “good morning”. Standing in his living area she surveyed the assortment of maps and notes on his table. She attempted not to look too pleased that he had been doing his assigned work.
‘There’s a pattern?’ she asked.
‘Good morning to you too,’ Twigs stifled a yawn and then nodded. Shiv smiled at him. ‘It appears that the missing persons have all visited this area at some point since they went missing,’ Twigs pointed to an area on the map on the east coastline. It was an industrial area filled with warehouses and cargo holds. ‘Interestingly some of these buildings along the dock are government owned.’
‘That’s not unusual,’ Shiv replied, sitting down and taking a closer look at the points on the map.
‘It is when all the rest are owned by Umbrae Storage Ltd,’ Twigs retorted. He attempted to keep the smugness out of his voice, although judging the look that Shiv gave him, he didn’t do a very good job. He cleared his throat.
‘I guess we had better go and take a look then,’ Shiv said, sounding a little less impress than Twigs would have hoped.
She waited on the sofa while Twigs dressed and donned a pair of clean, expensive shoes with a feeling of dread. He knew it would be a bad idea to wear them, it just felt so good to be in his own shoes and clothes again. He wriggled his toes. If he was going to die and civilisation was going to utterly collapse, he might as well be well dressed while it happened.
Shiv raised an eyebrow at him as he came back into the living area, glancing down at his shoes.
‘You know if you’re that worried, why don’t you just put on some cheap ones?’ she asked. Twigs gaped at her. ‘We’re going to the docks. They’re not exactly the cleanest of places and there’s probably people waiting there to kill us. It’s not like they’re going to care what shoes you’re wearing.’
Twigs was sure she was trying to be helpful, but Twigs couldn’t help feeling insulted.
