Mental Toughness: Foundational & Competitive
Mental toughness in sports starts with your daily discipline in life.
T he more I work with high level sports performers the more evident the following becomes: competitive mental toughness on the field, on the court, or on the course, originates from your foundational mental toughness - the discipline you have in your daily habits and lifestyle.
When an athlete asks me to help them with their mental game, my first action is to observe the discipline and the structure of their foundation - their lifestyle habits. Improving the athlete’s daily habits, are the first steps toward improving the player. Once the athlete has improved their lifestyle habits and strengthen foundational mental toughness, we can focus on competitive mental toughness.
Competitive mental toughness is not just about pushing through tough workouts, fighting hard and never giving up. It’s about building the right habits and staying disciplined on a day to day basis. In order to develop true mental toughness, you need structure to your day.
The people athletes choose to surround themselves with, especially their significant others, play a critical role in an athlete’s performance. For an athlete to develop the right mindset and purpose, coaches, teammates, family, and supporters all need to be on the same page.
I can easily see the level of discipline in someone’s lifestyle. A glance at the following reveals much about a person’s character. Is their living space a mess? If so, I already know that other things in their lifestyle may also be disorganized and messy. Are they always running late for appointments or practices? Though this might seem minor, it displays a lack of planning and self-discipline that contributes to foundational mental toughness.
Digging deep in competition, continuing to fight and to stay focused when fatigue and stress set in, and staying positive when difficulty arises, are all key components of competitive mental toughness. Competitive mental toughness skills originate from foundational mental toughness skills, which include staying disciplined in your day-to-day routines and consistently managing good habits while maintaining a positive attitude. When you are able to achieve this over a longer period of time, that’s when you’ll experience the greater rewards.
