Chapter Twenty-Three

Logan

I tossed and turned most of the night. The little time I’d spent asleep had been cut short by my sister’s exasperated, “Dude! Snore any louder and you’ll wake the entire building.” I’d almost pointed out that she did have a perfectly good bedroom she could sleep in if she didn’t like my snoring, but her dreams had turned to nightmares the second we weren’t in the same room. She’d wake screaming, and I’d be up anyway.

I couldn’t stop thinking about Kira and our kiss. She was right. I had kissed her back because I’d wanted to. I liked the feel of her in my arms. The taste of her kisses. But when I was near her, I had to remind myself she was a demon. She could burn me alive in the blink of an eye.

To help drill that fact into my brain, I went over what I knew so far. There had to be a way to avoid the war. Kira had done it, but Ariana and I couldn’t make the same mistakes she’d made. Whatever we did had to keep us human.

I refused to believe that the prophecy didn’t offer clues on how to stop the war—a small piece of information that would tell me what to do, if I could only find a copy of it, which proved to be impossible. It was as elusive as the damn disembodied voice I’d been hearing.

I watched Ariana sleeping on the couch, curled up on her side hugging her cream comforter. In the moonlight, she looked almost angelic. I realized she and Kira were a lot alike: pretty, smart, and caring. It gave me some comfort knowing that Ariana’s destiny brought her to Heaven.

Heaven was good. Right? A paradise. And angels were good. People prayed to them in times of need. Right? Yet, Kira didn’t believe that. She’d run from the safety of an angel into the hands of a demon. Did I even have that right? Her boss was in charge of demons; he had to have ultimate power or else those under him wouldn’t be afraid to rebel.

I sighed and kicked off the covers. Ariana grunted in her sleep and rolled over to her other side.

Kira’s words replayed in my mind: one soon-to-be-vanquished angel gets smart.

“No way!” I shot off the floor where I’d been trying to sleep and ran to our small kitchen table, sure I’d figured out who Kira’s boss was, and woke our laptop from sleep mode. I searched under demons. As I read, my heart raced, threatening to burst out of my chest and hide under the couch.

The next day in foods class, Mrs. Larson thought it would be fun to mix chemistry with cooking. Each team was given a thermometer, two fondue pots, and a few other items with the goal of understanding the difference between heating a liquid like water versus something more solid like cheese. I was just looking forward to eating small chunks of bread dipped in gooey, warm cheddar and brie.
