Rebecca

The reel in her hand whirred as the line released, the hook skimming through the air and landing with a plop in the dark creek water. Rebecca reeled the line in a few rounds and settled in for the wait.

“Good cast,” said Franklin with a nod in her direction.

She smiled. “Thanks. Let’s see who catches the first fish.”

He laughed. “Oh, that’s definitely going to be me, Proby.”

“You’re so confident, but it’s going to be your downfall. You wait and see.”

His eyes flashed. “You have no idea how much I want to tickle you right now, but I’m not going to let go of this rod because I’ve got to win.”

“Oh, poor honey, what a conundrum.” She poked out her tongue.

He lunged in her direction, falling well short of where she stood.

She laughed. “You make it far too easy, my love.”

They stood on the creek bank in companionable silence for ten minutes before Rebecca spoke again.

“How’s your head feeling today?”

“Great,” he replied. “I haven’t had any more pain. Everything’s healing up well, and I spoke to emergency services. They said Andy Flannigan and the other family in the van are all fine too. The bridge, however, is not. It’ll be a while before they can replace it, I’m afraid.”

She nodded. “I still can’t believe no one noticed it was failing before it happened.”

“I know, they really need a better system. I mentioned as much to the engineer I spoke with at the council. He said they’d work on it.”

“Good to hear.”

“We haven’t spoken about our fight,” he began.

She nodded. “I know. I’m sorry we fought.”

“Me too.”

“You know how hard I worked to get this job, all the things I went through.”

“I know,” he replied, his eyes on the water ahead of him. “I shouldn’t have suggested you quit.”

“But I heard what you were saying, too. When I had a chance to calm down, I realised you were right about one thing—we can’t work together. It isn’t fair on either of us, as much as I love it.”

He inhaled a sharp breath. “I wish —”

“I know.”

“So, what will we do?”

“I think I should try for a transfer to the Tweed Heads station,” she said.

“No, I should do that.”

“But you’re the boss, they’d miss you here in the Cove. No one will miss me.”

He grunted. “That’s not true, we’d all miss you.”

“Okay, well we can talk about it another time. But I’m open to the idea. And I know you only wanted what was best for me. I’m sorry I turned it into something else,” she said.

He smiled at her. “I’ll admit, it sounded bad. But it came from a good place.”

“Another thing I wanted to talk about—you mentioned babies.”

He rolled his eyes. “Did I?”

She chuckled. “Yes, you did so there’s no backing out of it now. In all seriousness—what do you think? Should we try for one?”

He grinned. “When we’re ready. I’d like to keep you to myself for a little bit longer.”

“And when that happens, when we’re ready for children, the house we’re living in really won’t be big enough for us all.
