Chapter 16
The expansive green stretching in front of Blakely Manor soaked Christiaanâs shoes in dew, and his footprints left tracks in the grass. Mists swirled around the trees. The outhouses loomed in the fog as large toads. Quiet blanketed the dawn. A shroud of mist wrapped the earth. The stillness of the morning comforted Christiaan. All was right in the world. He felt peaceâperhaps because of Andy. He glanced at her profile. She focused on the ground before them, her hands stuffed into her sweatshirt. He shoved her with his shoulder. âWhatcha thinking?â
âTrying to figure out why anyone would kidnap Hin Cho.â Andy glanced up.
âTo win a large sum of money.â His bet was on Spencer.
âThe motive wasnât game fixing.â
âWhy not?â Game fixing could be a lucrative business.
âThe pranks started during the womenâs competition. Why would they continue through the menâs? If he kidnapped her to win, then why not return her after the games?â
Christiaan pondered her question. But he didnât utter his unspoken supposition that Hin Cho might be dead.
Andy shook her head. âThey didnât keep her long at Dornoch. Something else is going on. We are missing a piece of the puzzle.â
âWhat about Mr. McGuffin?â Christiaan nodded. Talking with him earlier didnât relieve any of his qualms.
Andy brushed back her hair. âShe was held at his house at his golf tournament. Of course, he loses the most if the games fold. He certainly wouldnât want to jeopardize what heâs built here. We only investigate him as a last resort.â
âBut Sabrina says heâs our suspect.â
Andy frowned. She stopped on the grass and turned. âAnd you trust her above all else.â
He faced her. Bitterness tainted her words. âI wish I could tell you everything, Andy.â
âWhy canât you? You seem to share a lot of secrets with Sabrina.â
Andy leaned in, enforcing the question. Heat rose in his chest. âWhy donât you like her?â
âWhy do you assume I donât like her? You have funky chemistry with her. You donât have to explain anything.â She stuck her nose in the air and crossed her arms.
âOh, Andy, donât be childish.â
âWhy wonât you tell me anything?â
An emotional dam broke in Christiaan. Too many emotions flooded him. He didnât know where to start. He faced away again, squinting at the haze off the green.
Andy sighed.
He owed her answers. Some honesty at least. Before the barn, Christiaan slumped on a pile of damp hay. âI will tell you part of the story.â He patted the hay near him. âSit.â
With a frown still pasted on her lips, she sat. She kept her back rigid and her distance.
Rubbing his eyes, he sighed. âIn my youth, we lived in South Africa. My great-grandparents emigrated from Europe before World War II. At first, people were welcoming, but when we didnât side with them on certain political issues, tension rose in the neighborhood. My parents tried to stay out of it. But we were constantly harassed by a group, the loudest and most aggressive group in Durbin. One night, they came when I was gone.
