RP: I equate it with strength. Having given birth, I think women are incredibly strong. As well as the physical demands, you experience such hormonal and emotional turbulence, so the strength is also mental. I think the strength that comes from love and emotion is a very feminine attribute. I feel privileged to be a woman designing womenswear. I don’t want to restrict women in any way; they should be able to get physical, work, eat, and walk in their shoes! I don’t like anything forced, unnatural, or loud. My designs are intended to feel effortless and to do the work for you.
CEREAL: Do you find a particular kind of person is drawn to your designs?
RP: It’s not limited to a certain tier of people, which is great—it’s what I always wanted. Our clients range from a billionaire in India to a graphic designer in Swindon; from twenty-year-olds to supercool women in their fifties and sixties.
CEREAL: What do you think of Londoners’ sense of style?
RP: Londoners approach style very freely, and they’re not judgmental about what other people wear. I like the way they mix vintage, designer, and high-street pieces. The role the seasons play is interesting, too. It’s a layering city; you need to be prepared for rain and wind. Putting those layers together makes Londoners stylish, I think.
CEREAL: What kinds of challenges does your job bring?
RP: I think a lot about being in an industry that creates so much pollution. As a business we try to be environmentally aware and source ethically. A garment that requires so much skilled labor shouldn’t cost just a few pounds. When you’re a small company, you have the opportunity to encourage awareness of those things.
CEREAL: Will you always run the brand on a small scale?
