Safe Harbor
Grettaâs car, besides her van she used to tote around clothes in when she made deliveries, was a late 80s Lincoln, maroon, with maroon velvet interior. She found it in a junk yard, fell in love instantly and had redone. It was basically a boat on land and would have stood out anywhere.
An hour later, I had my coffee and a croissant from a local bakery, and for lack of anywhere else to go, I found myself a block away from the Dixon residence. It was familiar territory and very few people came down this road. It was the early afternoon, no one was home. I was pretty sure Preston wouldnât think to look for me here right now.
I charged my phone but kept it off. I had a feeling Preston would call. Theoretically, I should be calling him to yell at him, but learning heâd had me followed, it felt like a betrayal and I simply wasnât ready to confront it yet.
I had a feeling he was just having me watched because Iâd been so nosy about watching his dad for so long. Maybe to alert him if I ever found anything.
Maybe protecting his father...
He was always adamant his father didnât do anything, but the damages Mr. Dixon was doing to the company and continued to do, it felt like my father would never agree to it. Mr. Dixon could have done it just to get him out of the way to do what he wanted.
The Dixon house being quiet, as well as the neighborhood, gave me time to process. Preston had me followed, but that was something I had to settle with him.
There was the issue with the mugger. Diego left his opinion that it was most likely someone targeting me. I wanted to work with him to find out for sure. The more time after the incident, the more I questioned the whole thing: did I know the person, or was he really after me or just some money, all the questions filled in.
About my father and who had killed him... that was something I still wanted to work on, but despite all that happened in the last few days, Iâd no additional leads at all. Watching over the Dixon house, it had made me feel like I was doing something to keep on it. Yet Iâd lost my way and was just hoping something would fall into my lap. After the last year, it wasnât likely to happen.
Diego was someone who could help me with everything. A private detective was something I considered, but I knew everyone in town and they all knew Mr. Dixon. Diego might know what I could do next, if anything. A tip on where to go next would have been well worth all this trouble.
Iâd give him a few hours to clear up what he was doing at my house, and then send a text to see what heâd say to meeting and talking.
Hours passed as night fell with me flipping between dozing and debating if I should turn on my phone again to get in touch with Diego.
