Cedroc asked me to meet him in the galley.
At that point, I was too embarrassed that I still didnât know where the galley was to ask for directions. The Calliope wasnât that big. There were only so many rooms. I knew the bridgeâs location. I could make my way to the cabins and the observation deck.
How many more rooms could there be?
A lot, apparently. The Calliope, as compact as she was, was packed with all sorts of clever storage rooms. The next time I needed a closet designed, I was coming to whoever had built this ship.
Nearly twenty minutes passed before I stumbled into a room I hadnât yet entered.
âThere you are!â Cedroc grinned.
So, this was the galley? I looked around at the shelves lined with preserved food and a small cooking station tucked away in the far corner.
It was a kitchen.
Why couldnât Cedroc have simply said kitchen? It still wouldâve taken me just as long to find it, but I wouldâve known what I was looking for.
âSorry it took so long.â
âThatâs all right. It gave me a few extra minutes to set up.â
âSet up? What are you setting up?â A tingle of anticipation ran down my spine. Cedroc was standing in front of a cloth-covered table, but I couldnât see anything else beyond his broad frame.
âA surprise,â he said with a wicked smile.
I arched a brow. âWhat kind of surprise?â
âDonât judge me too harshly,â he prefaced as he stepped aside to reveal two table settings, a bottle of what I assumed to be alien wine, and a deep purple candle lit with a sapphire flame. âIâve never done anything like this before.â
My hands flew up to cover my gaping mouth. I wanted to smile more, but my cheeks were already aching with the effort.
âWhatâs all this?â I giggled.
âIâm not one for expensive dinners and fancy things. But you are. Youâve put in such an honest effort to better yourself since you arrived. Youâve slept on the ground. Youâve trekked through swamps. You saved our skin with the Qitzal. Youâve earned a reward.â
âCedroc,â I whispered.
âI know itâs not going to be as good as the meals you used to have on Earth.â His voice wasnât as steady as normal. He was nervous. My heart tightened behind my ribs.
âItâs perfect,â I assured him. âI couldnât have asked for a lovelier table. What will be served for dinner?â
All of Cedrocâs nerves flew from his expression as he grinned at me.
âIf I tell you, you probably wonât want to eat it,â he teased.
âFair enough. Where would you like me to sit?â
âWould you prefer a kitchen view or a storage view?â
âHmm.â I made a show of tapping my chin, weighing my options. âKitchen, I think.â
âExcellent choice, my lady. Itâs a far superior view,â Cedroc laughed.
He pulled my chair out from the table so I could sit. Then he grabbed the empty plates and took them to the cooking unit installed in the back of the room. I hadnât noticed at first, but sure enough, there was something in the oven as well as several steaming pots on the stove.
