The impact of congestion on air quality

Air quality in cities like London is so poor it is illegal. Most of the pollution is caused by diesel vehicles which may meet emission levels in tests in the lab, but emit much more when out on the roads. The greatest problem is nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a pollutant which is invisible and has no smell. Nitrogen dioxide affects the lungs of those who breathe it. The lungs of children are stunted, affecting those people for life. Additionally, exposure to NO2 increases the chances of getting asthma or lung cancer. It is not just pedestrians; even those driving the cars are affected. The government estimates that this pollutant leads to the premature deaths of 23,500 people across the UK each year, and 70,000 across Europe.
