Chapter XIV

The curtains' rustle startled Hommroummy out of his brown study. He spun, and gaped at the gas-filled tank that the opening draperies had exposed. "Gryll!" he exclaimed. "I had no idea—"

"Information gap deliberate," it interrupted. "Worry not; not inspecting." Hommroummy wanted to dry the sweat off his forehead, but that could be too revealing a gesture. One never knew what aliens would notice, and correctly interpret. So he contented himself with breathing deeply, and with ordering his stomach to untighten. "What can we do for you, sir?"

"McGill Feighan on Throngorn II."

"I'll attend to it at once, sir. What—"

"No. Handle Terran affairs, on Terra. Will direct matter personally."

"Oh." Again relief washed over him; again he refrained from displaying it. He was confused, though: if his superior were going to take care of it itself… "May I ask, sir, why you have told me of this?"

"Will need teleport. Am requisitioning Crafioni. Bad manners to weaken underling's staff without notification. Consider self notified." "Yes, sir," he said, but the fabric of the closing curtains kept his words from their target. He exhaled, and bent over to scratch a drowsy Angora cat. Strange being, Gryll. Yet if it chose to take charge of the Feighan thing, Milford Hommroummy would not argue. He'd already suffered too much from it, and, frankly, did not want to go another round with the Far Being Retzglaran.

Let the cosmic gamesmen fight it out between themselves, he thought. Then he and the other lesser beings could pick up the pieces…
