“So when we get to this youth group, what's the play?” Patrick asked, flipping through his comics that he definitely paid extra for on account of being a pain in the ass.

“I’m not sure exactly. We need to just play it normal and try to scope the place out.” Simone let out a sigh.

“I already know where…something is. I just hope we have a chance to go up there.”

They pulled into the parking lot and headed for the door. The lobby was visible through the windows as they approached. A lot of kids were funneling in, greeted by adults bubbling with motherly energy. It looked very nonthreatening.

“Man, if those ladies are cultists, I’m the fuckin’ pope,” Patrick side-mouthed to Simone as they entered. She shot him a quick elbow to the ribs to shut him up as they approached the table where everyone seemed to be signing in. An older lady was sitting at the table, checking things off on a yellow pad of paper. Kids were dropping coins in a Tootsie Roll bank on the table, smiling, and wandering up the stairs.

“Oh, oh, oh, everyone's going upstairs!” Patrick exclaimed loud enough to attract the lady's attention.

Her eyes widened, and her mouth slowly opened, stopping only as her gaze met Simone's. Simone was used to this sort of thing. The lady was clearly startled by her very non-church-like attire. Not wanting to deal with the awkwardness for very much longer, Simone waved.

“Hi. We’re here to be saved or something, I think. How much money is it?” She started reaching in her pockets for change. Patrick was chuckling.

“Oh, no, dear. You’re new, so you don’t have to pay dues. Just sign in here and head into the gym upstairs. Everyone's playing before we start. My name is Debbie. What's yours?” she asked nervously with as much friendliness as she could manage.

“My name is Luci—” Patrick began to blurt something stupid out as usual before Simone cut him off.

“I’m Simone. This is my friend Patrick. We’re just here to check this out. We saw a flyer at the library and had nothing else going on,” Simone said cheerfully as she grabbed Patrick's arm and dragged him up the steps.

“Are you fuckin’ stupid? We’re supposed to try to blend in and scope the place out, not scare the first lady we run into…Ouch.” Simone felt tinges of pain start going through her head as they reached the top of the steps.

“Fuck. Something straight over there really isn’t right, Patrick.” Simone winced as she motioned ahead to the lobby from before, now in normal lighting, with bright red carpeting. Large wooden chairs sat against the wall directly across from them, with the very large portrait of Jesus in the center. It was one of those paintings where the eyes seemed to follow you and made you feel uneasy just looking at it.

“No shit, something's not right. Look at that creepy-as-shit painting, and what's with the bloodred carpet? I thought it was creepy at night because of the lighting, but even now it's freakin’ me out.
