ETHAN STARED OUT THE WINDOW. Ironic that the unending stretch of cloudless blue sky should be so serene when he felt as if he were hurtling to earth in a thousand-foot free fall. He wished he had someone to tell him he was making the right decision. Stupid for a thirty-two-year-old man who lived by his own rules and instincts to suddenly need outside guidance.

If his parents were alive, he knew they’d both try to talk him out of his upcoming marriage. His mom and dad had loved each other wholeheartedly.

They’d also been dirt poor. Maybe they wouldn’t approve of his every decision, but they would have to admit that his choices had resulted in financial success. When Ethan had children, they would never miss a meal or go without shoes in the summer.

Marrying Jillian is the right decision. He’d be a fool not to ally himself with the wealthy Winthrops. Jordan Winthrop, one of Peabo-Johnston’s biggest clients, had introduced Ethan to Jillian and made it clear he favored a match between them. Ethan had to admit, Jillian was perfect wife material. Lovely, well-spoken, familiar with big business, a great hostess. With a wife like Jillian at his side and the contacts he would make through the Winthrop family, Ethan would never again have to worry about living a life like his parents if something happened to his present job.

His engagement to Jillian had worked out perfectly. He’d get everything he needed, and Jillian would get what she wanted. Although he hadn’t known his bride-to-be long, he’d seen that she craved a better relationship with her parents, longed for their approval. They’d made it clear that they completely approved of the engagement and that nothing would make them happier than Jillian’s marrying a successful man and eventually giving them grandchildren.

So Ethan had no reason to feel guilty about marrying Jillian. She wanted this wedding, too, for her own reasons. And he’d give her respect, support and fidelity, being a good husband in all the ways that mattered.

You’re just experiencing pre-wedding jitters.

And he must be going through that panicky syndrome where an almost-married man starts to notice how good other women look. Except he hadn’t noticed women, plural. Just the redhead seated next to him, asleep after her two shots of scotch and a stern talking-to by one of the flight attendants.

Since her eyes were closed, dark lashes sweeping the tops of her ivory cheeks, he took the opportunity to study her. Undisciplined red curls spiraled around her face and shoulders, more attractive in their disarray than chic, hundred-dollar hairstyles he’d seen. She wore a long, rose-colored dress that should have clashed with her hair, but instead lent a becoming pink blush to her high cheekbones. Her features were bold, a high, patrician forehead, a wide mouth that looked as though it laughed a lot. He remembered that her eyes were the dark blue of quality sapphires.

Too bad she was so unpredictable…contradicting herself from one breath to the next and reacting fiercely to what had been barely discernible turbulence.
