Chapter Eight

Adam waited to answer the obnoxious, overly loud knocking until the bookcase slid shut. He opened the door. The admiral, the commander, and three other men stood on the porch, while another was inspecting Adam’s snowmobile. Snow behind him growled softly. “Admiral. What brings you here?”

“Frankly, Doctor Prentiss, we’re curious if you are involved in the disappearance of the patient from room two zero four.” The admiral smirked. “Do you mind if we search your home?”

“I resent the implication and this invasion of my privacy. But by all means, go ahead, though I believe you should be showing me a search warrant.” Inwardly, he hoped that every trace of Nattie was gone as he led his dog to the couch. “Lie down, Snow.” he ordered, knowing that seeing the dog on the couch would explain the rumpled Afghan. Snow jumped up, then off again just as fast, when the men began trooping through the cabin.

“Stay, Snow. Sit,” Adam ordered and began stoking the fire. He heard the men opening closets and drawers. It took forever before they all trooped back into the living room.

“Where is your vehicle? In the garage? Where is the access to it?” the commander demanded.

Adam pointed at the laundry door in the kitchen. “Through there.”

Two of the men disappeared into the garage.

The admiral caught Adam’s attention and asked, “Your clinic. How many rooms does it have?”

“My office, the reception area, and two small examination rooms. It is closed on weekends, but you’re welcome to go and inspect it. I can lend you the spare key.”

The admiral held out his hand. Adam was glad he had a spare because he didn’t want to leave the cabin. He grabbed his keys from the pocket of his parka, removed the extra key from the ring, and gave it to the man.

The two men returned from the garage, and one of them reported, “Nothing, Admiral.”

The admiral smirked. “My gut tells me you had something to do with the woman’s disappearance. Maybe you have her stashed away in a motel or hotel. We’ll find her.”

“If you believe it was all a plot for social media attention that failed, why are you so keen on finding her?” Adam kept his tone casual.

The admiral shrugged. “I don’t believe for a second that she suddenly has no memory at all. There’s more to her story. I’m certain of it. Especially after what she mumbled about in her sleep.”

“I thought I explained that.”

“Yes, and I researched it. Delayed memory loss? I even consulted some of our own specialists, and there is no such thing.”

“Then you’d better talk to more knowledgeable doctors. I researched it when I had other patients with memory loss. Delayed memory loss is very rare and unless a physician had cases of patients with that type of amnesia, they may not be aware of it.”

“Rare? Unheard of. We’re done here. I’ll return your key to you tomorrow after we have inspected the clinic. Thank you for allowing the search.”

Adam was thankful
