Chapter 9
One week later
"Mabel, for the last time, you are not a suspect," Harry said as they walked down the road. They were on their way to Mabelâs bakery. She hadnât been down there in a while.
Mabel was clad in Harryâs overcoat and an oversized sunshade; that was the only way she could walk around Willowcreek without attracting stares and whispers.
"Maybe you are too trusting," Mabel said as they walked around the corner.
"Youâve never given me a reason to doubt you," he said. His words landed so heavily that it made her stop and turn to him.
"Thank you, that meant the world," she said.
He smiled, and it lit up his handsome face, reminding her that these days, she rarely saw him smile, and she had a hunch it was mostly because of her and the rotten case.
âWhen are you meeting up with your attorney again?â he asked.
âSheâll call me,â Mabel replied.
Her attorney had come in specially recommended by Captain Butch. After a few conversations with her, Mabel felt like she had a shot at coming out of this.
She made a mental note to do something nice for Captain Butch if she ever got out of this without going to jail.
There was no one else who would want Amy Niles dead except her. Even Emma had started her writing, hanging around just for formalities.
A black truck swished by, and Harry pulled her away just in time before she was knocked out. The back of the truck hit a bump and raced past.
"Your neighbor's boyfriend really needs to learn about speed limits," Harry grumbled, looking over at her to see if she was hurt.
In a split second, their eyes met, and they held each other's gaze. His gaze lingered a bit too long on her lower lips, and his touch felt a little more electric to her.
Mabel snapped out of it first, clearing her throat. He pulled away and looked around, disoriented and fighting to gather himself.
"Shall we?" he asked. Mabel nodded, and they began their walk down to her shop.
Mabel gasped in horror as she stood in front of her precious little bakery; Harry put a hand of sympathy over her shoulders.
One of her windows was busted, and her door had been spray-painted with the vilest words.
"Itâs alright, itâs not that bad," Mabel affirmed to herself.
"Mabel!" came the high-pitched voice behind them.
Stacy ran up to Mabel and hugged her.
"You poor, poor thing, how have you been?" she crooned, talking to Mabel as if she were a toddler.
"I have been quite well," Mabel said.
Stacy looked up at the broken window and sighed.
"Jerks! Blake and I shooed them off; they must have come at night," she said.
Mabel smiled gratefully. "Thank you so much."
"Oh, anything for Mabel. I still canât believe youâre going through this," Stacy cried a bit too loudly.
She leaned over and held Mabelâs hands. "Iâll look after your bakery until you come back. I donât mind going in to do a bit of cleaning for you, so your things donât get too dusty.
