THE CAREER GIRL MURDERS

Year 1963

Janice Wylie

Emily Hoffert

In the early 1960s, Manhattan’s fashionable Upper East Side was the center of the universe for single men and women. The social scene was vibrant, filled with young people. Among them were Janice Wylie, twenty-one, whom the tabloids called “blond and vivacious”; the bespectacled Emily Hoffert, twenty-three, who was described as “scholarly”; and twenty-one-year-old Patricia Tolles. The three young women resided together in Apartment 3C at 57 East Eighty-Eighth Street, a block from Central Park.

Wylie, the daughter of a New York advertising executive, hailed from a family of successful writers and was a bit of an urban sophisticate. Hoffert was the adopted daughter of a Minnesota physician. She had graduated from the prestigious Smith College with plans of becoming an educator. Tolles was employed by the book division of Time-Life.

On August 28, 1963, the same day that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. first gave his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, Tolles came home to find the apartment in shambles. In a panic she telephoned Wylie’s father, who lived nearby. He immediately responded and, upon entering the bedroom, discovered a gruesome scene. Wylie and Hoffert both lay dead and bloodied, tied together by strips of torn bedsheets. They had been stabbed multiple times, and Wylie had been sexually assaulted. The press dubbed the carnage the “Career Girl Murders.”

The New York Post would later describe the case as “the biggest, most sensational, most extraordinary crime and police investigation in New York’s history at the time; one that would have a chilling effect on the cops, on the prosecutors, and on the courts nationally.”
