I looked at Mosom and Wyatt on the paper and whispered real quiet so not even Kokum could hear. “Why are they talking about us? Why are they so mean? Please don’t tell me any white lies, Mosom. No white lies, Wyatt. Please…” I waited for them to say something, but I couldn’t hear nothing. Their faces were too smudgy and drowned with tears.

“…I wonder where that baby’s mother is,” the girl said. She looked at my brother.

“Passed out in a ditch somewhere. I don’t know. Who cares. Can you just forget about them for five seconds?”

“It’s just shitty of mom to dump her kids on grandma like that. Like, why can’t Native people just not have any fucking kids if they can’t take care of them all?”
