And it comes to all in time, boys.

For on the day they died, boys,

God …

… was on the other side, boys.

To add yet another layer of complication, the whole show was shot before a live studio audience. The special effects were often experimental, so shooting a half-hour episode took up to six hours. DAAS had to keep the crowd happy for extended periods between scenes. Of all the material for the shows, these unrecorded comedy marathons were doubtless the most interesting. Our improvisation skills were tested to the limit. As proof, the studio audience members stayed for the duration, apart from their wee-breaks. We were all making something we believed in, so the energy stayed high.

One particular song in the series caused more than the usual concern. The Bastille Day episode was all about Paul dealing with his alcoholism under the orders of Richard and me. We tied Paul to a chair and fed him the worm from a tequila bottle, as an alternative to alcohol. From here he was transported into a fantasy world where we were all fascist leaders. Paul was Hitler, I was Perón and Richard was a gay Nazi stormtrooper. The episode moved on to what was possibly one of our most confronting songs: ‘I Want to Be a Mexican Hitler’.
