Morning brought good news about Dominic’s condition. He would make it, but he wouldn’t be able to travel—not on foot or by bike. Following the sunrise service for Lunch Box, Ayden, Clara, and Laney stopped in to say their goodbyes to Joyce and Dominic.

“Kara invited us to go with them to Mexico,” Joyce said with a sad smile on her face. “You three could come.” She took Laney’s hand. “I know you want to get to your family.” She smiled up at Ayden. “And Ayden and Clara will make sure you get there.”

“We will, and we’re happy that you’ll be away from all this fighting. Mexico will be like a long vacation, especially with winter right around the corner.”

“Yes,” Joyce said. “I wasn’t looking forward to winter cold without electricity. These old bones don’t do well in that kind of weather.”

They hugged and then Laney slipped inside the makeshift clinic to say her goodbyes to Dominic.

Ten minutes later, she returned, anxious to hit the road. “Dominic must be on some good drugs. He couldn’t stay awake.” She climbed on her mountain bike and gave everyone a wave. “Thank you for your hospitality. Good luck in Mexico!”

Clara hugged Joyce and wiped away a tear as Joyce stepped back.

Joyce spread her arms wide and embraced Ayden. “Thank you for getting me to Harpers Ferry to find my grandson. I couldn’t imagine losing him too—never knowing what became of him.”

Ayden’s throat constricted. He understood what she meant. Not knowing the fate of Mia and the boys was torture. He had to face the fact that he might never reach them, but he couldn’t bring himself to let go of the dream. “Take care of yourself, Joyce. Say our goodbyes to Dominic when he wakes.”

Joyce waved goodbye as Ayden helped Clara onto the back seat of the tricycle and pushed off. His body immediately protested as he pedaled down the driveway toward the country road, feeling both exhausted already but driven to reach Crystal Springs, Pennsylvania, and the hope of a quick rescue from Laney’s dad.
