Loan sharks often employ specialized enforcers to instill fear in borrowers and forcibly collect from deadbeats. Frank Calabrese Sr., who led a Chicago street crew with estimated loan sharking revenues of more than $2,600,000, counseled his enforcers to “do anything you have to do” to collect on nonperforming loans. Calabrese’s star collector—former Chicago police officer Philip “Philly Beans” Tolomeo—went a bit too far by pocketing a fraction of the crew’s juice for himself. Calabrese redressed Tolomeo’s administrative misconduct by breaking his nose, taking title to his mother’s home, and turning over the majority of his hundred juice accounts to junior associate Louis Bombacino (who was later convicted of threatening a prospective grand jury witness).
