I’m watching every move you make: Look for her, and she dies.

Hope was a firefly on a moonless night. She knew Dolan would still try to find her. A note and a threat wouldn’t deter him.

An impossible smile stretched across his lips, revealing perfect teeth. But there was something wrong with that grin. Like it was created by moving the muscles in his face into a certain configuration, not because he really felt joy. It was the same kind of dead smile Adam Killion had given her. The mark of a sociopath.

He aimed those terrible empty eyes at her. “How much has he told you about me?”

She looked away. What was he talking about?

“I said, how much has he told you about me?” The way he enunciated each word carried the threat of harm if she didn’t answer.

“He said you were making him look bad, twisting evidence.” She hated sounding hesitant and questioning.

A genuine smile lightened his features. He could be handsome in a Mark Harmon, Sam Elliot kind of way, and that was disconcerting as hell, that he could appear so normal and be so evil.

He shoved his hand toward her. She flinched away before recognizing the gesture. As out of place as it was, she finally understood. Did he really think they needed a formal introduction when Dolan was lying on the floor unconscious?

“Ferol Fleming. You can call me Ferol.” Satisfaction dripped from each word. “Shake my hand,” he said through clenched teeth, and the handsome mask disappeared.

She was too frightened of what he could do to Dolan to defy him. She reached for him. His hand wrapped around hers, his grip overly firm, then it got harder and harder, grinding her knuckles together, crushing them. Pain zinged up her arm. Her legs buckled, and she went down onto her knees, body twisting to escape the agony. He released her, and she drew her throbbing hand to her chest, cradling it with her other.

Before she recovered, he had his cell phone aimed at her, filming her pain.

“Pick up the picture.” He gestured toward the strip of photos that lay forgotten on the floor.

She hurried to comply, gripping them in her uninjured hand since the other one wasn’t working yet.

“Tell me who you see in the photos.” He continued to aim his phone at her.

“Adam Killion,” she said, looking between the phone and him.

“Your father wanted to see you one last time.”

“My father was murdered.” The words of defiance burst out before she could contain them.

He drew back his leg and kicked Dolan’s inanimate body. Air whooshed out of him, but he didn’t wake. “Talk to me like that again. Go ahead.”

Her soul sobbed that she’d caused Dolan extra pain. She bit the inside of her cheek to keep from speaking.

“Surely you’ve got something else you want to say.”

She shook her head.

“You are lucky to carry the genes of Adam Killion, but don’t think I won’t punish you every time you step out of line.” He hit a button on the phone, and then his attention focused on the screen.
