Earlier in the evening, at the Bar T Ranch, Mae Trotter paced the kitchen floor, cursing the name of Sheriff Langan.

What had Langan done with Harley and Cy? “Probably took ’em out somewhere and shot ’em down like dogs,” she said aloud. “Who knows? Maybe he’ll even come out here and shoot me down, too!”

Mae opened the cupboard and took a whiskey bottle off the shelf. It was almost full. She popped the cork, put the bottle to her mouth, and took a long pull. She felt the whiskey burn all the way to her stomach. It made her eyes water. She blinked and stared at her reflection in a nearby mirror.

“Mae, you hit the bottle before, when your ma and pa died in that fire … and again when Willie was murdered. Both times the stuff about did you in. Remember how sick you got? I mean, for better than a week both times! Put that bottle back in the cupboard.”

She looked into the mirror for several more seconds, then cursed, put the bottle to her lips, and took several gulps.
