Chapter 16
When Maikedon walked into Trina's workshop, it was to see Brinker arguing with her over an open medical kit. The lunch tray was sitting forgotten on the café table and Trina's skin was starting to turn colors.
"It's not that bad," she said. "It's just a bit deeper than I thought it was. I'll wrap it tight and get to Medical for a couple stitches in a little bit."
"And I'm telling you that you shouldn't need stitches," Brinker told her waving the med tool at her. "This is supposed to seal anything that's not bone deep and it's not even slowing the bleeding."
"Sounds like she needs to get to Medical now, then," Captain Cretus said.
"Maikedon, it's not that bad," she told him. "I just caught my thumb on something sharp. It's a hazard of the profession."
"Really?" he asked. His glance at Brinker showed a man who was deeply concerned and trying desperately to not show it. "Come show me and then we'll have lunch."
"It's nothing," she said and stood. Her first step towards him was fine, her second less so, her third missed and only the fact that he'd been moving towards her let him catch her before she hit the floor. Short, shallow breaths told him Trina had very abruptly become aware of how much trouble she was in.
"This seems like a little more than nothing," Captain Cretus said. He squeezed her then helped her sit up.
"I don't understand," she said. "It was just a little nick from a sharp edge."
"There shouldn't be a sharp edge on that dress," Brinker protested. "And you've been bleeding faster since I came in here. Something is wrong."
"Clearly," Captain Cretus said. "What can you use to wrap the thumb so we can get you to Medical without bleeding all over?"
"Scrap basket," she panted. "Under the cutting table. The soft yellow strips are cotton and long enough."
Brinker ran to the cutting table and pulled the basket out. The yellow strips were on top and he grabbed several. Maikedon supported Trina and held her hand still for the valet to wrap the strips tightly enough to make her wince. She leaned forward and her breathing changed.
Maikedon stood up then bent to slide his arms under her legs and behind her back. "Call Mintonar," he told Brinker. "Tell him we're on our way and that Trina's been poisoned."
"Are you sure?" Brinker asked. "About the poison?"
"Can't you smell it?" Maikedon asked before he strode out the door and down the corridor.
He wanted to run, would have run if he were younger, but he knew it wouldn't make enough difference to the woman in his arms and the jostling would make her uncomfortable.
"What did you mean about smelling it?" Trina asked.
Her head was leaning against his chest and her breath was getting shallower. She hadn't fought him at all when he'd picked her up and that worried him more than anything else.
"Can't you smell it?" he asked.
"I can kinda smell blood," she told him. "Scents have been kinda weird but I read that was normal for being in outer space.
