When we got back to the house, mother had fallen asleep propped up in bed, her face not looking as gaunt as it had a few days before. I sat on the bed and held her hand.

“Thank you mother,” I whispered.

Her eyes slit open. “For what?”

“For letting me go. You know if you want me to stay, I can still cancel everything and…”

Her hand squeezed mine and a light shushing sounded from her lips. “Then who would come home Sunday and report back to me about the big event? You’re going and that’s final,” she insisted, looking over my shoulder at Sylvie. “Thanks for coming on such short notice.”

Sylvie sat on the other side of the bed and brushed Mother’s matted hair from her eyes. “You and me are like family, Joyce. You should have called sooner.”

“I didn’t know it’d get this bad…thought it was just an ole flu bug.”

“You’re going to get better and better and don’t think anything less, understand?” Sylvie’s eyes darted over to me. “Now Haley, you’d better get moving so you don’t get to Margie’s too late. We’ll go over everything I need to know about Joyce’s medications down in the kitchen while I make tea, and then off with you.” Her fiery silver-streaked red ringlets bounced with command.
