Chapter Five

The motion detecting light on the garage lit the driveway as Vaughn pulled in. As always, he parked outside, since a collection of junk took up the garage. He fumbled through his keys and stumbled into the den. With only the ambient light from outside to guide him, he flopped into his armchair and leaned back. “God, I miss you, Lydia,” he moaned.

“I miss you, too,” her sing-song voice whispered back.

“Cal!” he bellowed. “If this is one of your fuckin’ jokes, I swear—”

“Hush,” she answered. “You use too much profanity. You know I don’t like that.”

The shivers running through Vaughn’s spine grew to paralyzing tremors as he sat listening to his heartbeat. In the chair to his left—Lydia’s chair, he saw her precious profile. “Turn on the light, handsome,” she urged. “And relax. I didn’t come to scare you.”

Vaughn clicked on the light between them and gazed through teary eyes at the beauty he thought he would never again be so privileged as to witness. Her dark red hair draped over her shoulders and framed her bright blue eyes as they peered at him. Over her blouse, she wore the button-down sweater Jamie had bought for her the previous Christmas—white with red and green snowflakes. She tugged her skirt into place and uncrossed her stocking-covered legs to set her shiny heels on the floor. A smile arced across her glossy lips as she reached for his hand.

Time seemed to thump as he took it—as if the universe had slowed for a speed bump. “I’m starting to think you’re really here,” he whispered in a crackle.

“Well, I can see you weren’t expecting me. You’d have decorated the place.”

“Babe... I-I couldn’t.”

“Make sure you do next year. Jamie’s pregnant. She’ll need help.”

“Sh-She’s... why didn’t she—”

“She doesn’t know it yet. It happened about an hour ago.”

“Were you... you know...”

“Don’t be silly. That would be an invasion of privacy.” Scrunching her cheek, she asked, “A table dance, huh?”

“Oh, babe. I was bein’ an idiot. We were arguing, and I acted like a kid. But I swear... never once did I—”

“Hush. I know, and we’re not gonna waste our precious few minutes together worrying about that.”

“A few minutes? It’s only ten o’clock.”

Bounding to her feet, she urged. “Lie down with me and hold me for a while.”

Vaughn followed her to the sofa and lay on his back. Lydia snuggled up beside him and rested her cheek on his shoulder. His trembling subsided as she rubbed her palm over his chest. “You’ve been feeling guilty about what happened,” she sang in a tone just above a whisper.

“I wish I could take it back,” he sobbed. “I’d still have you.”

“It’s not that simple. I made the decision to go out. You don’t have to feel guilty about that silly argument, or what happened. I forgive you... and I ask that you forgive me.”

Vaughn managed to blubber out, “Of course I do,” before breaking into tears.

Lydia kissed his cheek as he quieted. “Redemption is a powerful gift,” she explained, resting her chin on his chest.
