Chapter 13

The Stones of Giza

After getting a shower and freshening up, Ava had breakfast with Lachlan. They were inside a spaceship, and from their private dining room a grand view opened on to endless space dotted with infinite specks of light. She thought that spaceships would have a burnt metallic scent to them, but the rooms in this one were pleasantly fresh.

“What is this ship?” Ava asked. “It’s so massive.”

Lachlan set down his cup of coffee. “This is the Stones of Giza, one of the Earth’s finest.”

“We’re on an Earth fleet ship?”

“You don’t remember?”

Ava shook her head.

“When you came with that small ship to Phobos, these guys were right behind you. The governments of Luna and Earth worked together to track me to the Primacy hideout. Long story short, they negotiated with the terrorists to get me, and you, out of there. Also, Mars had sent ships to reinforce the Solar Alliance law. With that much firepower at their doorstep, the Primacy had no option but to surrender and let us go. For the Solar Alliance, this was a grand and very much needed win.”

He told the story so smoothly, like there was nothing to it, but still Ava recalled experiencing none of it. She only remembered waking up at home one day with Lachlan lost on Luna, and her weird dreams about the ragged Russian man in the cafe. Even those memories seemed fickle and fading, and there was so much she missed completely.

“How did I get to Phobos?”

Lachlan chuckled. “You hitched a ride on a light cargo ship. You do have guts!”

“What about the crew?”

“The crew? There was just the pilot, and don’t worry, we paid him handsomely. He serviced his ship on Phobos and left for some business on Mars. But baby,” he said, and took her arm, “I owe you my life. I really hope your memory returns soon.”

Ava nodded along. Everything felt so hazy. Dreams and reality mixed in her mind, and she thought she’d been on a spaceship with the Russian man, who had showed her the ring that contained mystical alien machinery. As if on cue she checked Lachlan’s hand, and the only ring on his fingers was their wedding ring.

“You’re awfully quiet,” he said.

“I’m sorry. It’s just that I have this big blackout and crazy dreams. It scares me.”

“Darling, you’re safe with me. And being on this ship is safer than being on the ground on Earth. Also, the doctors are at the top of their game; if there’s anything wrong, they will spot it and fix it. You’re in safe hands.”

She bit into her croissant. It tasted heavenly. “I was so worried.”

“I understand. It was terrible for me as well—I wanted so much to reach out to you, just to let you know I was alright, but I couldn’t. The worst was the beginning, when they shot us down, killed the crew… it was terrible. But once we left Luna, they treated me like royalty.”

Ava couldn’t imagine what it must have been like.
