Riggs could tell the moment Annie become a block of ice—cold and detached. She ceased making eye contact, and her body become rigid.

What had she recalled? She’d claimed she wasn’t married, so that wasn’t it. Her back was straight and her shoulders back. It didn’t surprise him she was a weapons instructor, ever since he’d witnessed her take down Waylon and handle herself coolly in the attack.

Her green eyes held a storm of emotions, much like her undercover name.

Josie returned the table and glanced at Annie, and then at him, making Riggs wonder what she was thinking. Did she sense the change in Annie’s demeanor like him? Then she said, “Annie, tell me what you remember about the children’s rescue.”

“I’m afraid not much. It was a two-story red farmhouse with a front porch—not a wraparound. I don’t remember the location or how to get there, but it was in the middle of nowhere. And if I recall right, a fair distance from the road.”

“In the trees or in the open?”

Annie squinted as if trying to remember. “A few trees, but mainly in the open. And there were several vehicles parked outside.”

Josie nodded. “That’s good information. Can you describe them?”

She shrugged. “A minivan and three cars, I think.”

“What about the takedown? How were you able to find Kay-Kay and Jonah?”

Annie frowned. “I don’t know. I simply don’t remember. I just have a vision of the house, not the people or how I found the children.”

“Okay. That’s good.” Josie continued to nod calmly. “Were there other children at the home?”

“Yeah. I’m certain there were. I believe several. No names or faces, just a feeling.”

“Okay, sounds like it may be a holding house. How did you learn the location? The last time you checked in, you were investigating a lead, and you promised to call if you learned anything.”

Annie fidgeted with her hands. “I don’t know. I can’t remember that part, either. I recall how important it is not to go in by ourselves, but to always wait for backup from the team or law enforcement. It’s one of the first rules.” Her hand went to her head, like she had a headache. “I simply can’t remember how I got the kids.”

Concern for Annie surprised Riggs. He’d fallen fast for the woman, which was uncharacteristic for him. It had taken the summer months in between semesters for him to ask Claire out. Maybe he’d been alone too long. That was it. It was time he joined society again and quit staying on his ranch so much. Maybe he should call his brothers or mom and go in for a visit.

“We’ll ensure Kay-Kay and Jonah are returned to their parents and then work with the local sheriff’s department to see about locating the place.”

Annie put on what he was certain was a forced smile in response.

Frustration bit at Riggs. He should be happy, but he wasn’t. What if the guys hunting them made another attack? He cleared his throat. “I don’t like it.
