The lower level of the auditorium was more suffocating than usual, with the addition of fifteen animals in the gathered crowd. More than two-thirds of the class had been unable to summon their familiars on the first try. Still, each of them looked slighted and embarrassed as they left to join their instructors outside. Abby did not look at Rhiannon as she rose to her feet, but could feel the heat of her glare nonetheless.

“That thing is so creepy,” she said. Kent turned to respond but stopped when Abby stood. She had every intention of defending her unfrist, of telling Rhiannon what she thought of her attitude. Then Rhiannon raised her perfectly-drawn eyebrows, her blue eyes flashing. Abby lost her nerve and swallowed the words, sitting back down. Rhiannon snorted and walked away.

Abby felt disappointed in herself but wasn’t sure if it originated with her or Kent.

Magi Lila was remarkably tired, worse than the day before. “More rare than summoning a familiar on the first try is doing Magic with your familiar on the first try. I see it maybe two or three times each year, so don’t get ahead of yourselves. Today, I’m going to demonstrate with my familiar, and then give you all a chance to attempt it. Any questions?”

No one raised their hand, so she took the excieo box from the pocket of her orange pants. She held it in one hand as she recited the summoning spell. She only said it once, and a large raven descended from the sky and perched on her shoulder. It surveyed the students with interest.

Watching the magisters do Magic was still a treat for Abby. She knew this was basic stuff for a graduated witch, but she hadn’t grown up seeing Magic every day like most of her classmates.

Violet squealed and reminded the class that she also had a raven familiar.

“Ravens and cats are the most common,” Louis said. “This won’t be the last time you meet someone who also has a raven. It might not be the last time today.”

Violet scowled.

“Class, meet Stryker. Stryker, this is my class this year.”

Abby smiled, relieved the professor also spoke to her familiar as though she were a person and could understand.

“Alright, what should we demonstrate?”

“Elemental Magic,” Zoran Damask suggested. Abby eyed him and thought she could understand Celeste Mercer’s devastation over being rejected by him, because he was devastatingly handsome. He was all height and broad shoulders and suave brown hair and blue eyes, strong jaw and dimples, deep husky voice. But she also took note of the way his eyes kept darting in Kent’s direction, and she wondered how poor, heartbroken Celeste had missed it. “Stryker must be great at wind and air Magic, but can you do terra Magic together?”

Magi Lila chuckled. “That’s a great suggestion, because terra Magic has never been my affinity, either. But I can demonstrate how having a familiar makes it better.”

They didn’t even need to communicate. Magi Lila knelt to the ground and dug a small hole with her bare hands as Stryker took flight into the nearby trees.
