6SOCCER CRAZY: CAN WE KICK IT? YES WE CAN!

What can we say? Boys love their soccer, isn’t that what they are all about? They will kick anything remotely round, any time, any place, anywhere, any age. They play it, watch it, talk about it and many of their role models are soccer players. So what happens if your child can’t kick a ball, doesn’t follow the game and finds that he might be left out of games at school or club because he can’t keep up?

At the end of the day, everyone is an individual and many will not be interested in sporty activities. What you will need to find out is whether your child is not interested in soccer because he prefers science or the arts, for example, or whether he just lacks the skills and self-confidence. If he loves soccer but doesn’t have the skills to participate as a player, then you could develop his interest in coaching or officiating instead. This means that, socially, he will be able to keep up with the playground discussions on soccer and not have to feel left out. As therapists we may not have a working knowledge of the ‘offside rule’ but we do know what skills you need to kick a ball around!

Soccer can develop many skills:

•balance and co-ordination

•good posture

•eye/foot and eye/hand co-ordination

•body and spatial awareness

•strength and flexibility

•cardiovascular fitness

•working as part of a team

•development of social skills and sense of belonging

•learning how to co-operate and compete

•learning to express emotion and imagination through new experiences

•taking responsibility for actions

•dealing with success and failure.
