CHAPTER 12

“Re-creation, re-creation,” I murmured, running my hand down the well-worn pages of Nonna’s spell book.

The old spiral had more translations than the Bible.

She’d written her spells and recipes on old parchment and when that got too worn out, she transferred it over to notebooks in her chicken scratch.

It was about time someone just typed out all of this and uploaded it to the cloud or something.

Would have made things a lot easier to find.

“Whatcha looking for?” Bella’s voice crooned through the back office.

Unlike James’ wood paneled and book filled room, our six-foot by six-foot cement block of an office was filled with walls of liquor bottles, a safe, and the ancient metal desk that Nonna did her bookkeeping on.

“Just something,” I waved my hand, hoping maybe she’d leave.

I hated the stale alcohol smell that permeated through the office, but it was one of the few places I could get some alone time.

Or at least I hoped I could.

Until Bella had shown up.

I knew she was going to read my mind anyway so there was no use lying.

“Re-creation?” she asked, stepping forward. “Whatcha trying to recreate?”

I sighed, flipping the page. “That night I was attacked in the back alley.”

“What?” she bellowed, her heels clicking against the tile floor as she stomped further into the room.

“It’s nothing, just someone came after me and someone stopped them,” I muttered.

Bella’s hand slapped the desk, forcing me to look up at her narrowed eyes. “Look, your mind is saying one thing and your lips are saying another and I can’t keep it all straight.”

“Then go back to the bar and don’t listen,” I grumbled.

She grabbed my chin, her long talons for nails digging into my skin.

I wanted to look away, but she forced that steely eyed glare on me.

So, I thought back to that night.

If she was going to be nosey, fine, then she could feel it all.

Our eyes stayed locked as my mind traveled back to that night.

Every smell.

Every feeling.

It all washed through me like a tidal wave until Bella dropped her hand, whimpering.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone, Gia?” she whispered.

I swallowed the lump in my throat. “The detective knew and I thought he was looking into it.”

“So, he’s not?”

“Yes—well no.” I shook my head. “Whatever. He isn’t our concern. Just help me with this re-creation spell so we can see what happened.”

“Are you sure you want to do that?”

I snapped my head back up to see her staring at her fingernails.

“Why wouldn’t I?”

She shrugged. “I’m just saying, if that attack scared you, why revisit it?”

“How else are we going to catch whoever is murdering people and leaving them on doorsteps?”

She blinked hard. “Um, by letting the homicide cops investigate?”

It took everything I had not to roll my eyes.

Some investigation they were doing. The lead detective couldn’t even admit when he’d made a mistake.

Calling me his girl.

Insulting me.

Then insulting my family?

Who did he think he was?

Pft.

As if my anger and annoyance couldn’t get any worse, Bella had the audacity to squeal, lifting the spell book from the table.
