Afeo Speaks

John could hear a faint voice trickling through the tunnel of darkness that held him in its grip. A voice called his name, over and over. The opening widened, and he came into the light.

Marita was pounding her fists on his chest. “Breathe, John Itone! Breathe! You cannot leave me now!”

John coughed and gasped for air as saltwater spewed from his mouth and droplets of rain plopped onto his face. He raised himself up and looked around. He saw Naimi and Totomo, but not her son. He remembered the shark. “Pako, is he safe?”

Pako’s welcome voice came from behind him. “I am okay, John Itone. I swam up to the surface before the shark came.”

“What happened? All I remember is seeing the shark’s eyes, and then I lost consciousness.”

Totomo’s jaw tightened for a moment before he said, “The shark was after your blood. I came from behind and drove my knife into him. He swam away, leaving a trail of his blood. This drew the sharks away from you. I pulled you out from the rock and brought you up just in time. I am afraid, though, that, in the process, I caused you more injury.”

John felt a stabbing pain in his legs and stared blurry-eyed at his injuries.

Marita took hold of his hands and kissed his face. “You gave us all a terrible scare. We thought you did not breathe anymore and that you had passed over.”

Naimi inspected his legs. “The wounds are deep. I must tend to them with bruised leaves, or he will become feverish when the infection sets in.”

Marita scowled at Naimi. “You have only a few days to make him well and ready for the battle.”

“Trust his wounds to me and my medicines,” Naimi said.
