Another Actor
After talking to Martha, Heather and Amy sat with the other parents in the audience. They watched the rehearsal and were proud of how Digby was doing as a director. He was patient with the children and gave good notes on how to add some more flavor to the scenes.
He dismissed the cast after a productive run through, and Heather wanted to congratulate him. However, as she saw the actors about to depart, she realized that it would be a good idea to talk to some of them too. She mentioned it to Amy, and Amy nodded.
âHow about that wise guy?â asked Amy.
Heather agreed, and the two private investigators hurried to intercept John Dodgson before he left the building.
âExcuse me,â Heather said. âDo you mind if we ask you some questions?â
âAbout what?â he asked, looking suspicious.
âAbout the murdered director,â said Amy.
âWeâre private investigators helping the police,â Heather explained. âWeâre looking to see if there could be a link between the pageant and the death.â
âWhy would that be?â asked John. âI mean what could a holiday pageant have to do with his death?â
âThatâs what weâd like to find out,â said Heather. âWe were told that he was a little jumpy at some rehearsals. And I saw when he stormed out of the last one.â
âBut that might be unrelated to the murder,â said John. âWhat if he was just concerned about the show while here? Then someone killed him for another reason?â
âThat could be what happened as well,â said Heather. âDo you know of anyone who might have wanted to hurt Mr. Lockwood?â
âNo. I only know him from here, and everyone liked him,â said John. He looked toward the door.
âWere you upset to hear what happened to him?â asked Heather.
âOf course I was,â said John. âIt was a terrible tragedy. Just terrible.â
âWhy were you late today?â asked Amy, changing the subject.
âWell, I didnât think there would be rehearsal today after Mr. Lockwoodâs death,â John said. âI didnât realize that they would get a new director so soon. I know someone at the community center left a voicemail, but I didnât notice it until later.â
âDo you know anyone who might have wanted to stop this pageant from going on?â asked Amy.
âNo,â John said. âAnd I donât really see what more help I could be. I need to get going. Iâm sure there are other people involved in the show who could be more helpful.â
âWait,â Heather said. âThere is a reason why we wanted to speak with you.â
âThere is?â
âThe only hiccup we heard about the pageant involved your prop for the We Three Kings song,â said Heather. âApparently your gold went missing at some point?â
âRight. Thatâs what went missing,â said John. âOld Man Miles lent us some items to use in the show because heâs a kindly gentleman. And it was upsetting to think that some of his items went missing.â
âWas the gold real?â asked Amy.
âNo,â John said. âThe gold is worthless.â
âSo, everyone was just upset because a prop was missing?â Amy prodded.
âWe thought someone must have stolen it,â said John.
