Another Actor

After talking to Martha, Heather and Amy sat with the other parents in the audience. They watched the rehearsal and were proud of how Digby was doing as a director. He was patient with the children and gave good notes on how to add some more flavor to the scenes.

He dismissed the cast after a productive run through, and Heather wanted to congratulate him. However, as she saw the actors about to depart, she realized that it would be a good idea to talk to some of them too. She mentioned it to Amy, and Amy nodded.

“How about that wise guy?” asked Amy.

Heather agreed, and the two private investigators hurried to intercept John Dodgson before he left the building.

“Excuse me,” Heather said. “Do you mind if we ask you some questions?”

“About what?” he asked, looking suspicious.

“About the murdered director,” said Amy.

“We’re private investigators helping the police,” Heather explained. “We’re looking to see if there could be a link between the pageant and the death.”

“Why would that be?” asked John. “I mean what could a holiday pageant have to do with his death?”

“That’s what we’d like to find out,” said Heather. “We were told that he was a little jumpy at some rehearsals. And I saw when he stormed out of the last one.”

“But that might be unrelated to the murder,” said John. “What if he was just concerned about the show while here? Then someone killed him for another reason?”

“That could be what happened as well,” said Heather. “Do you know of anyone who might have wanted to hurt Mr. Lockwood?”

“No. I only know him from here, and everyone liked him,” said John. He looked toward the door.

“Were you upset to hear what happened to him?” asked Heather.

“Of course I was,” said John. “It was a terrible tragedy. Just terrible.”

“Why were you late today?” asked Amy, changing the subject.

“Well, I didn’t think there would be rehearsal today after Mr. Lockwood’s death,” John said. “I didn’t realize that they would get a new director so soon. I know someone at the community center left a voicemail, but I didn’t notice it until later.”

“Do you know anyone who might have wanted to stop this pageant from going on?” asked Amy.

“No,” John said. “And I don’t really see what more help I could be. I need to get going. I’m sure there are other people involved in the show who could be more helpful.”

“Wait,” Heather said. “There is a reason why we wanted to speak with you.”

“There is?”

“The only hiccup we heard about the pageant involved your prop for the We Three Kings song,” said Heather. “Apparently your gold went missing at some point?”

“Right. That’s what went missing,” said John. “Old Man Miles lent us some items to use in the show because he’s a kindly gentleman. And it was upsetting to think that some of his items went missing.”

“Was the gold real?” asked Amy.

“No,” John said. “The gold is worthless.”

“So, everyone was just upset because a prop was missing?” Amy prodded.

“We thought someone must have stolen it,” said John.
