As our record of wins mounted, I continually reminded all my players how unique and difficult it is to complete an undefeated season in any sport, at any level.

“We are now the target,” I commenced, “which means we not only have to play better, but we have to perform better.”

“Coach, what’s the difference?” Jonathan asked.

“Performing better is not just playing baseball better. It’s working harder, improving our sportsmanship on and off the field, and conducting ourselves better. These teams can ‘make’ their entire season by beating us. They can become the only team to beat us. But if they can’t beat us, they’re going to want to get into your heads. They’re going to harass you, antagonize you, and push all your buttons, only to get you to react, to respond, or to fight back. You have to be better. You have to maintain your composure, not trash-talk back, and walk away.”

“Coach, we don’t walk away from no one!” Alan stammered.

“Hell no, Coach,” responded E-man.

“Yes we do,” I continued. “We walk away winners. We walk away fighting our battle on the diamond and nowhere else. And we walk away with pride and with sportsmanship. Let’s surprise the players, let’s surprise their fans, and let’s surprise the umpires. They’ll be surprised that as good as we are on the diamond, we’re not cocky, we play at a high level of sportsmanship, we don’t trash-talk, and we don’t argue calls from the umpires.”
