Jeff said, “I see what you mean, Jim. One stupid question, and the problem falls apart.”

Nikki said, “He will tell you that we did all the hard work, figuring out all the things that wouldn’t work, so all he had to do is ask about the unlikely things.”

Jeff replied, “However he does it, it’s pretty impressive.”

Juke asked, “I wonder if all the other files are encoded the same way?”

Gene said, “I checked them when I saw how regular the blinks were in this one. None of them have the same kind of pattern. It looks like the Boss is going to have to come up with a crazy idea for each one of them.”

Jeff asked, “Could it be gestures, or some other body movement, instead?”

Gene said, “Checking.”

After a little wait, Gene said, “That helps with some of them. There are still a few we won’t be able to get open.”

I looked at Jim. He said, “Don’t look at me, Boss. I’m just a dumb ol’ carpenter.”

I looked at Nikki. “Let’s see, I did pretty well in cryptography at the Academy. Could it be word frequency, or something like that? Standard coding techniques, applied to speech, instead of text?”

Gene said, “I’m not sure, but I’ll check into that, and get back to you. I won’t have answers very soon, though.”

Nikki replied, “That’s good enough, Gene. Just have a look, and tell us what you think. We can always bring anything you can’t crack back to the Boss to play with.”

“Okay, Ma’am. I’ll let you know when I have some answers.”

I looked around the room. “Have we done as much damage as we can, for right now?”

Jeff said, “I think so, Boss. That was a productive meeting.”

I looked at Jim. “You need to have a talk with him about his language, Preacher. There’s no need to go talking nasty, is there?”

Jim asked, “You mean the M-word?”

“I do.”

“I’ll talk to him about it, but he’s old and set in his ways. I wouldn’t expect much in the way of results, Boss.”

Jeff looked back and forth between us while we were talking. When we finished, he asked, “Alright, then, what would you call it?”

I said, “You could just say we got a lot done. There isn’t any need to accuse us of having meetings, is there? What next? Are you going to say we have an H.R. Department?”

Jeff got a horrified look on his face. Fake, but it was a nice effort. “No, Boss, I wouldn’t do that! That would be terrible!”

Nikki laughed, and Juke looked lost. I asked, “Did we leave you behind, Juke?”

“You did, but it looked like fun. I guess I need to work on the culture pack.”

Nikki said, “I’ll explain it to you, while we’re working on what Gene unlocked for us.” She looked up at me. “Do you need us for anything else, Admiral Caveman?”

“I need you every day, Space Cadet. I can’t think of an excuse to keep you here any longer, though.”

“We’ll get out of your way, then.
