Chapter Eleven

When we finally return to our room, I immediately take off my platform heels and plop down on the couch.

“That was fun.”

Mason removes his jacket and flings it over the chair.

“It was—except I’m still hungry.”

I scoff. “We just had dessert.”

“Those were bite size. They don’t count as dessert.”

I laugh. “Well, you’re in New York, so I’m sure you could go out and find something to eat.”

He gives me a thoughtful look. “You’re right. Let’s go get pizza.”

“It’s after midnight.”

“So? We used to stay up late every night.”

Although the idea of New York pizza does sounds enticing…it’s been a long and exhausting day.

“Okay. How about room service?” he suggests. He finds a menu and sits down on the couch next to me. “Oh, they have nachos.”

I shake my head. “Order whatever you want. I won’t be partaking.”

He reaches for the phone on the side table and orders nachos and a plate of cookies.

“Alright. Now tell me about the phone call,” I demand.

“Okay. Just let me change first.” He pats my leg and then goes to his room.

I stretch out on the couch. I probably should put on my pajamas too, but I’m too tired to get up. I scroll through my phone to Serena’s message.

Leo texted me earlier. We just finished at the welcome party. They’ve literally rolled out the red carpet for us.

“Ahh, much better.” Mason returns wearing a snug gray T-shirt and athletic joggers. He’s not wearing any shoes, but he’s one of those men who was blessed with nice feet. And that’s saying a lot because I’m one hundred percent not a foot person.

He lifts my legs, sits down on the couch then rests them on his lap. I don’t read anything into it because this is the type of friendship Mason and I have. There’s never been awkwardness between us, and I don’t want that to start now.

“I’m ready for my food. I’m starving,” he says.

“Stop stalling and tell me about the phone call.”

He nods. “You’re going to hear soon enough, and I told your mom I wanted to be the one to give you the news.”

A knot starts to grow in the pit of my stomach as all the worst-case scenarios fly through my mind.

“What?” I sit up straight and put my feet on the floor. “Is something wrong with my grandmother? Or someone else?”

Mason places his hand on mine. “No. It’s nothing like that—”

A knock on the door interrupts him. What the hell?

“Room Service,” a voice says.

“My nachos,” Mason exclaims, jumping up to answer the door.

When he returns, he sets the tray down on the coffee table and lifts the plate cover.

“Ah…perfect.”

“Mase, you’re driving me crazy. What’s going on with my mom?”

He lets out a puff of air and turns toward me. “Dean and Caitlin are engaged.”

My mouth drops open. That was the last thing I expected him to say. I’m not sure if I should be relieved, shocked, hurt, or sad? Maybe a little bit of everything.

“What?”

Mason leans his head to the side. “I told your mother you didn’t see a future with Dean, so you’d be fine with this news.
