Chapter Eleven
When we finally return to our room, I immediately take off my platform heels and plop down on the couch.
âThat was fun.â
Mason removes his jacket and flings it over the chair.
âIt wasâexcept Iâm still hungry.â
I scoff. âWe just had dessert.â
âThose were bite size. They donât count as dessert.â
I laugh. âWell, youâre in New York, so Iâm sure you could go out and find something to eat.â
He gives me a thoughtful look. âYouâre right. Letâs go get pizza.â
âItâs after midnight.â
âSo? We used to stay up late every night.â
Although the idea of New York pizza does sounds enticingâ¦itâs been a long and exhausting day.
âOkay. How about room service?â he suggests. He finds a menu and sits down on the couch next to me. âOh, they have nachos.â
I shake my head. âOrder whatever you want. I wonât be partaking.â
He reaches for the phone on the side table and orders nachos and a plate of cookies.
âAlright. Now tell me about the phone call,â I demand.
âOkay. Just let me change first.â He pats my leg and then goes to his room.
I stretch out on the couch. I probably should put on my pajamas too, but Iâm too tired to get up. I scroll through my phone to Serenaâs message.
Leo texted me earlier. We just finished at the welcome party. Theyâve literally rolled out the red carpet for us.
âAhh, much better.â Mason returns wearing a snug gray T-shirt and athletic joggers. Heâs not wearing any shoes, but heâs one of those men who was blessed with nice feet. And thatâs saying a lot because Iâm one hundred percent not a foot person.
He lifts my legs, sits down on the couch then rests them on his lap. I donât read anything into it because this is the type of friendship Mason and I have. Thereâs never been awkwardness between us, and I donât want that to start now.
âIâm ready for my food. Iâm starving,â he says.
âStop stalling and tell me about the phone call.â
He nods. âYouâre going to hear soon enough, and I told your mom I wanted to be the one to give you the news.â
A knot starts to grow in the pit of my stomach as all the worst-case scenarios fly through my mind.
âWhat?â I sit up straight and put my feet on the floor. âIs something wrong with my grandmother? Or someone else?â
Mason places his hand on mine. âNo. Itâs nothing like thatââ
A knock on the door interrupts him. What the hell?
âRoom Service,â a voice says.
âMy nachos,â Mason exclaims, jumping up to answer the door.
When he returns, he sets the tray down on the coffee table and lifts the plate cover.
âAhâ¦perfect.â
âMase, youâre driving me crazy. Whatâs going on with my mom?â
He lets out a puff of air and turns toward me. âDean and Caitlin are engaged.â
My mouth drops open. That was the last thing I expected him to say. Iâm not sure if I should be relieved, shocked, hurt, or sad? Maybe a little bit of everything.
âWhat?â
Mason leans his head to the side. âI told your mother you didnât see a future with Dean, so youâd be fine with this news.
