CAHMCP CHALLENGES

Segregation as an Ongoing Reality

The continuing reality is that Chicago remains one of the most segregated cities in the United States. Even though CAHMCP can point to its ongoing success in preparing young people to achieve academically and socially, there is still a pervasive difference between the opportunities for white and minority students. John Bradley, one of the founders of CAHMCP, said:

I grew up in Englewood in the 1950s when it was predominantly white, and I had to deal with racism at home and at school. The question was this: Would I respond in a way that changes things, or just accept the status quo? (Trice, 2013)

In taking up the challenge of racism, CAHMCP has changed to composition of the medical profession in Illinois and beyond.
