While Byrne was gone, Campbell decided to broach the other matter.

“Sirs,” he said, “it may be a moot point, in any case. My cover may already have been blown.”

“Oh? How so?” Durand wondered.

“Just before I went to Commander Byrne to report, I got a notification of unauthorized access of a report I wrote a while back,” Campbell explained. “The analysis on the Saarestik battle.”

“But that’s a classified report,” Birken observed.

“Just so, sir,” Campbell agreed, “and I had all the appropriate covers and secure entries placed on it. Still, someone hacked it. I find it an odd coincidence that this happened on the very day that I begin looking into Captain’ Rao’s case. AFTER I’ve made contact with quite a few people who may or may not be involved, including her staff,” he pointed out. ‘Not to mention the guy who had it in for me in my Academy days,’ he added to himself, before continuing aloud. “And frankly, sirs, I don’t much believe in coincidences. Oh, the occasional outlier probability event happens, but in general? No, things like this have too many possible connections. It doesn’t do to ignore them.”

“Do you think you’re in danger?” Durand wondered.

“If they want Captain Rao dead, then anyone investigating their attempts is in danger, Admiral,” Campbell noted. “So... yes.”

“Do you want off the case?”

“No sir. I’m not asking for that at all. Frankly, my teeth are in this one, and I hope that neither Captain Rao nor Admiral Pachis wants me off the case. I simply wanted to make you aware of the incident, and its potential tie to the case.”

“Told you,” Durand murmured to Birken, smirking.

“You did,” Birken agreed, a slight grin on his own face. “Bulldog, this one. But we need to do something to give him the ability to defend himself if he should need it. Including, I think, the ability to pack.”

“Let’s wait and see what falls out from Pachis and Rao,” Durand decided. “As for that, I have some ideas already. Just roll with what I suggest.”

“I can do that,” Birken agreed.
