Chapter 15

I WOKE UP THE NEXT morning with more energy than I had the day before when I woke up in Kincade’s suite. Part of me was glad he was in the city. The other part of me wanted him to go back to Dallas. But, if he hadn’t been following me, then I probably wouldn’t be around.

I doubted he went back to Dallas just because I said so. I had a hunch he was going to hang around and keep an eye on me. I wasn’t sure why I felt that way but there had been too many coincidences since I met him. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time when I needed him the most. I didn’t want to admit that gave me a weird sense of comfort.

Lexi and I decided to plan the heist for that night. I was still not one-hundred-percent sure she wasn’t working for my uncle but at the moment she was all I had. She was smart and totally computer-hacker savvy. Even if she was working for Edward, who cared? She was clearly on my side which gave me some ease about the whole situation.

While she procured two uniforms from Chingshung Cleaning Service, I headed out in search of a store to buy daggers and arm myself. No way was I walking into that with no weapons and I’d left my last two in the thighs of that demon thug.

I asked the concierge where to shop. He sent me to Sheung Wan where there were lots of antique shops and other stores. Even amidst the tourists and residents, I sensed the Fallen. Uneasy, I kept aware of my surroundings. I assumed if I sensed them, they sensed me, too.

Armed with my walking map, I left the hotel and made my way down Queen’s Road, curving toward the shopping area on Bonham Strand. The brisk walk was invigorating after the previous days’ events.

The shops were full of eye-popping color. The district in Sheung Wan was crammed with open-air stalls and people. They sold everything from eggs and exotic fruit to dried fish on the street. As I made my way further to West Lok Street, street vendors and women wearing straw hats crowded the area selling their wares. That was where I found some of the oddest things—snakes and monkeys’ glands—to some of the most normal things—copper mirrors, gems, watches, necklaces, ancient coins, stamps.

I wandered my way through the streets. Some vendors sold traditional Chinese medicines. Shops sold incense and funeral offerings. Everything one might need in the afterlife. Moving along the street, I found sellers of handbags and matching shoes, electric fans, cognac. But nothing that sold daggers.

I passed Man Mo Temple which was a famous landmark according to my map. I turned up the road from the temple and descended several steps until I reached Upper Lascar Row. I found a collection of vendors selling bric-a-brac, souvenirs and memorabilia. I finally reached the heart of the antique district where shops displayed pottery, jade carvings, vases.
